Observation of International Human Rights Day has no significance: Sarangthem Manaobi

Sarangthem Manaobi, IPS (retd), has said that as the provisions of Human Rights are not followed in the State, there is no significance of observing International Human Rights Day in the State.
Sarangthem Manaobi made the remark while speaking at the International Human Rights Day observation organised by the Lawyers for Human Rights, Manipur today at Manipur Press Club under the theme 'Equality-reducing inequalities, advancing human rights' .
Speaking at the event, Sarangthem Manaobi, IPS (retd), said the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948 to safeguard and uphold the human rights of every individuals all over the world and since then the day has been commemorated as International Human Rights Day.
However, just after the adoption of UDHR, India annexed Manipur to the Indian Union in 1949, which goes beyond the charter of UDHR, he added.
The imposition of AFSPA-1958 has led to numerous human rights violation in the State and as such the observation of International Human Rights Day holds very less value, he added.
Babloo Loitongbam, executive director, Human Rights Alert, Manipur presented a lecture on 'Violation of Human Rights in Manipur after annexation by India'; Rinku Khumukcham, editor Imphal Times on 'Violation of rights of Journalists in Manipur'; and social activist Yendrembam Kiran Singh spoke on 'Violation of rights of persons with disabilities'.
The observation was also attended by Maisnam Korouhanba Luwang, District and Sessions Judge, Thoubal (retd) as presidium member.
