Imphal, November 10 2014:
Taking strong exception to the series of rape and murder of women in different parts of the State in the last couple of weeks, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai has stated that the situation demands collective effort of the Government and people to check this disturbing trend.
Briefing media persons in her office chamber today, Mirabai said that people need to wage a collective battle against such abominable crimes like rape and murder instead of heaping all the responsibility upon the Government.
Mirabai said that she shocked beyond words on hearing the news about the brutal rape and murder of women at different places.
Even as many rapists and murderers have been booked and punished according to law, the bestial and brutal crime of rape and murder have not shown any downward trend.
"Being a woman, I was frightened to the core on hearing about the rapes and murders of a minor girl at Tharoijam and a young girl at Thoubal", Mirabai said.
Parents as well as civil society organisations need to study the criminal tendency of the culprits.
The Government too is not sitting idle.
It has been exploring all possible measures which can effectively check such inhuman crimes.
It demands a serious analysis whether the youngsters are using modern technologies like computers, internet connections and mobile phones for constructive purposes or otherwise.
It is feared that these modern technologies have become a serious factor for moral degeneration among many youngsters.
The Government's policy of extending financial assistance to rape victims is aimed at boosting their morale, Mirabai said.
