Imphal, February 08 2021:
Congress staged a protest at Mayang Imphal today demanding disqualification of the 12 MLAs who have been 'unconstitutionally' appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries by the BJP led State Government.
At the demonstration organised by Mayang Imphal Block Congress Committee, vice president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Dr Kh Ratankumar said the sit in cum hunger strike was staged to safeguard the rule of law and democracy.
He continued that the incumbent Government appointed the 12 MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries under the Manipur Parliamentary Secretary (Appointment, Salary and Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2012 and the Manipur Parliamentary Secretary (Appointment, Salary and Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Repealing Act 2018.The Congress has been protesting against such appointments and also approached the High Court of Manipur, he said and added that the Court on September 12, 2020 made a judgement that the position held by the Parliamentary Secretaries is office of profit and as such the post is unconstitutional.
Beside submitting a memorandum to the Governor and Election Commission of India (ECI), members of CLP have brought the issue on the floor of the Assembly to disqualify the 12 MLAs, Dr Kh Ratankumar said and expressed disappointment that the ECI is remaining silent till date.
Saying that they have also complained to the Supreme Court regarding the issue, the former Minister added that the Congress resolved to protest democratically from today onwards to save democracy and the Constitution.
The protest will continue in different places, he added.
