Imphal, September 06 2012:
Rodents menace coupled with 'strange' pre-mature dying up of crops has caused many sleepless nights for jhum farmers of Nungba area in Tamenglong district as rodents in hordes felled standing crops much to the desperation of the jhum farmers.
According to Lungkhangga Gangmei, helpless farmers of Mongjarong Khunou village, said to be most hard-hit by the strange phenomena, have formed a committee with the mission to highlight the plights of the farmers to the Government in the light of the situation.
The prospect of no harvest at all to their hard work has haunted them.
The committee has, in the meantime, called for emergency relief to all concerned with the appeal to assess and study the cause of the phenomena.
Locals said that rodents had attacked their crops at an early stage of growth.
The surviving crops have now died down pre-maturely due to reason unknown to the farming community.
