Blasts at Mapal Kangjeibung ; SIT to probe: Biren

Chief Minister N Biren has stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be formed to investigate the two hand grenade blasts which injured two Assam Rifles personnel at Mapal Kangjeibung last evening.
With due permission of the Speaker, the Chief Minister gave a brief report of the grenade attacks at the State Assembly today.
All efforts would be invested to form a SIT by tomorrow in order to ascertain how such attacks were carried in the very heart of the capital and devise precautionary measures accordingly, the Chief Minister informed the House.
He stated that a hand grenade exploded about 88 feet to the North of the VIP gallery at around 5.35 pm and another grenade exploded about 97 feet away from the VIP gallery in the same direction.
Notably, the 15th DGAR Sentinel Cup Equestrian Championship is going on at Mapal Kangjeibung.
Assam Rifles' Warrant Officer Ulapkumar Pal (52) from Aizawl and Rifleman Mon Bahadur Limbu (30) from Mangan, Sikkim were injured in the blasts.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the grenade attacks so far.
Levers of the hand grenades were found inside the compound wall of Mapal Kangjeibung and it is suspected that the grenade attacks were carried out when there was heavy presence of auto-rickshaws on the adjacent roads, Biren stated.
While condemning the attacks in the strongest term, the Chief Minister stated that stringent security measures have been put in place.
He also appealed to all the people to bear the inconveniences caused by intensified security measures.
The primary duty of the Government is to protect the lives and properties of citizens, he added.
Another SIT has been investigating into the bomb blast which occurred on the footpath that runs in front of M Sector and Johnstone Higher Secondary School on January 15.The SIT led by ADGP Dr Pramod Asthana and assisted by IGP L Kailun has been investigating into the blast, Biren informed the House.
