Barak Heritage Foundation launched at Senapati

To preserve and protect Barak catchment area, Addl PCCF, Govt of Manipur, Dr Puni launched Barak Heritage Foundation (BHF), during a simple function held at Tahamzam Guest House, Senapati.
The foundation was launched in the presence of Thaikho Peter, Executive Member, ADC, Senapati; Sille Anthony, Jt Registrar, JNU, New Delhi; D John Sha, DFO of Senapati Forest Division; tribe presidents of the district and delegates of different tribes.
Speaking at the event, MS Jerome, convener of the foundation, stated that despite being a lifeline for thousands of people in the district, no initiative has been taken up to protect and promote the Barak River.
Various tribe presidents who were present at the launching programme mentioned that Barak Festival started during the tenure of Markson as the president of NPO.
Urging all to search ways to conserve the river, the tribe presidents assured that necessary aid will be extended from their side in the process.
They also urged all to plant saplings in all side of the Barak source to save the river.
Barak is one of the biggest and longest rivers in Manipur.
At the event, Dr Puni stressed on the need to preserve the Barak River.
If one has to live, people need to take care of the river as it sustains life to people of the region, he said adding that climate change is accelerating due to rapid felling of trees.
Barak River will run dry if people do not intervene and take up necessary measures at the earliest, Dr Puni maintained.
