A two-day legal awareness programme organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and College of Social Work (CSW) Ucheckon was opened today at Emma Lai Khulembi Mandop, Khurai.
The opening function was graced by MPCB Chairman Dr Ng Bijoy, MSCW Chairperson Dr L Ibetombi, MSCW Members June Rose Vaiphei, H Piteswori alias Memi, retired Social Welfare Director S Saratkumar and retired LDA Director Th Manihar as presidium members.
The programme is being sponsored by the National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
Speaking at the program-me as a resource person, former MSCW Member Secretary Advocate S Megha- chandra underscored the importance of imparting educa- tion and empowering women by way of alleviating their economic condition to bring about a healthy society.
In addition, women should be aware of the gender related laws enforced in the country as well as their rights.
Earlier, Dr Ng Bijoy stated that violence against women is not perpetrated by men alone.
In many cases, women commit violence against women.
Gender discrimination is still very much alive in the society and the ugly face of female foeticide has crept up in Manipur society, Dr Bijoy decried.
