Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur has approved appointment of 15 executive members for the 2014 term with IPSA president Johnson Elangbam nominated as the convenor and Th Somorendro of LEEPUN and Justice Heisnam of UNACSO named as the co-convenors.
Speaking to newspersons at its Wahengbam Leikai office today, Johnson said that the Committee is a conglomerate of 36 civil society organisations based and functioning in both the hill and valley areas.
Stating that the Committee was formed on october 20, 2011 with the aim to uniting different organisations campaigning for similar issues and provide a common platform for the ethnic people to air their grievances, he affirmed that the 15 executive members comprising of representatives of various ethnic groups testify that the Committee is heading in the right direction.
According to executive member Mutum Churamani, the Committee will campaign for a special economic development policy for the ethnic communities and check random hiking of prices of essential commodities by the business community.
Contending that the Committee was formed to neutralise protracted agitation calls that often disrupt normal transportation of goods and people, he also confided that it would take all possible measures to promote the Indo-Myanmar border trade and effective administration in the State.
Asserting that the Committee will not relent from any activity that stands to bring goodwill and promote amity in a multi-ethnic society like Manipur, Churamani also sought cooperation of the people in achieving the Committee's aim to restore harmony and development in the region.
The 15 executive members include top functionaries of civil society organisations such as AMUCO, HERICOUN, NIPCO, AMAWOVA, EECHAL, AMMDO, KREDO, WACAK, CLK, IMA Lup and WWOK.
