Imphal, June 02 2018:
Even though the Government banned recycled plastics in the State since last year, the Government has done nothing to let people as well as enforcing agencies know what are recycled plastics.
Notably, the theme of this year's World Environment Day is 'Beat plastic pollution'.
Many environmental activists have pointed out that very few people have a clear idea of what recycled plastics are even though the Government banned recycled plastics in the State since last year.
Although it is said that plastics thinner than 50 microns have been banned, the Government has done nothing to enable enforcing agencies determine the thickness of plastics.
Even if police seize plastic bags imported through Moreh, the Government has not made any arrangement to enable police determine the thickness of these bags, said the environmental activists.
Directorate of Environment Deputy Director T Brajakumar said that the average quantity of solid wastes churned out from Imphal city in a day is 100 metric tonnes and it include 5 per cent plastics.
This percentage of plastic wastes is People have a habit of disposing plastics at low-lying areas and these plastic wastes are deposited at lakes every time there is flood thereby posing serious threats to the ecology of the lakes, Dr Brajakumar said.
Even if they are not brought down to lakes, plastic wastes cause land pollution where they are disposed, he added.
