Imphal, May 02 2016:
Following the failure of the Manipur University authority to revoke the Dean's Committee resolution, Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) has resolved to shut down academic activities in the campus on May 3 and May 4 .
MUTSU staged a sit-in protest for two days on April 30 and today in the MU campus.
MUTSU will leave no stone unturned and will march forward with intense forms of agitation with ATSUM and other students' organisations until MU authority revokes its decision, MUTSU said in a statement.
The tribal students have been demanding revocation of two resolutions adopted by the MU Deans' Committee on April 4 on reservation matter.
It also urged the State Government to intervene and resolve the reservation issue at the earliest.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) affirmed that it will enforce the total shutdown at MU in collaboration with MUTSU on May 3 and 4 as the second phase of the agitation.
ATSUM in a statement requested all departments to cancel or postpone any academic activity in the larger interest of the tribal community.
It also urged the right thinking citizens of the land particularly the tribal populace to extend unstinting support and cooperation in the course of its agitation against 'discrimination' and 'marginalisation' of tribal community in the State of Manipur.
It should not be forgotten that Manipur University was upgraded to Central university for the whole community and not for any particular section of the society; as such, asserting the rights of the tribal in reservation matter is an unalienable right of the tribal students' community, said ATSUM.
