Imphal, June 25 2022: Columnist of The Sangai Express, who writes under the column 'From the Eastern Front' Mingyashin Shaiza has been selected for the "Media Fellowship on Climate Change Reporting" by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, today.

In line with the topic of the media fellowship Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Environment) MH Khan announced that the Manipur Plastic Policy, which has been approved by the State Cabinet will come into force from July 1 .

Altogether 10 media persons belonging to different media houses have been selected for the fellowship and they are Mission Oinam (Poknapham), Robinson Wahengbam (Sanaleibak), Yumkhaibam Gyaneshor (ISTV), Phurailatpam Keny Devi (Imphal Free Press), Huidrom Ronibala (Naharolgi Thoudang), Francis Songate (AIR Imphal ), Akoijam Tompok (Impact TV) S Roshimala Devi (IS Com) and Mingyashin Shaiza (The Sangai Express) .

The list was announced during a Sub-Editors' Meet on Climate Change Reporting & Award of the 3rd State Level Media Fellowship on Climate Change Reporting 2022-23) held at the conference hall of the Directorate at Porompat.

Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Environment) MH Khan was the chief guest of the function.

Directorate of Environment and Climate Change Director Y Nabachandra, Joint Director Dr T Brajakumar, Scientist of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore Professor Ravindranath, Editors of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics Pradip Phanjoubam, Sangai Express (Manipuri edition) Khogendra Khomdram, Impact TV Yumnam Rupachandra, Sanaleibak Hemantakumar Ningomba and Group Editor of Imphal Free Press Irengbam Arun also attended the programme.

Speaking at the function, MH Khan said that the Manipur Plastic Policy approved by the Cabinet will come into effect from July 1 onwards and those who defy the norms of the policy would be punished with imprisonment of upto six years and will be liable for Rs 1 lakh fine.

He also said that the State Government has been putting in efforts to adopt "Adaptation Plan for Climate Change" .

MH Khan further stated that the Government is seeking to take a loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to initiate a mega project to restore Loktak Lake and promote it as a tourist destination.

Saying that there are indications of climate change affecting the State too, the Additional Chief Secretary urged the media to play a key role in disseminating the seriousness of climate change to the common people.

He also stressed on the need to adopt proper land use planning to prevent artificial flood during the monsoon.

Director of Environment and Climate Change Y Nabachandra maintained that the preparation for the State Action Plan on Climate Change Version 2 might be completed by the end of next month.

There is also a need to formulate a comprehensive transport policy to tackle air pollution in the State, he added.

In the technical session of the meet, Professor Ravindranath spoke in detail about the commitment given by India to tackle climate change at UN Climate Change Conference 2021 held at Glasgow and also responded to the queries raised by journalists from different media houses during the function.
