Imphal, May 25 2021: Amid fear of an impending 3rd wave of COVID-19 hitting children, a 7-year-old girl and 15 adults succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours.

This was amid the State recording the highest ever single day spike of 824 fresh infections.

This is the second time that a child has been claimed by Covid in the second wave, with a 5 year old child falling victim to the virus on April 8 .

The minor girl hailed from Imphal West district.

She died of COVID-19 an hour after she was admitted at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat early today.

She was admitted to the Covid Ward of JNIMS today at around 3.57 am and succumbed at 5 am.

She was Covid positive without comorbidity, said a statement of the hospital.

Notably, the death of the minor girl was found not included in the daily report of the Government COVID-19 Common Control Room issued today.

The control room reported only 15 deaths, all adults.

With the 16 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll due to COVID-19 in Manipur has touched 721 .

The total number of Covid positive cases is 45,451 including 6,785 active cases.

The number of recovered cases has reached 37,946 with 468 persons discharged after recovery today.

The recovery rate stands at 83.48 per cent.

So far, 3,52,651 persons have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the State.

Even as Manipur is witnessing a surge in the number of cases, Imphal West district, since the past few days, continued to report the highest number of fresh infections and deaths.

The district reported as many as 361 new Covid positive cases and 9 deaths (including the minor girl) today.

Meanwhile, the 15 victims, excluding the minor girl, as per the COVID-19 Common Control Room died at Shija Hospital (6), RIMS (3), Babina (3), JNIMS (2) and District Hospital Bishnupur (1) .

Six of the 15 deaths were women.

All 15 were above the age of 40 while two were below the age of 50 .

According to the Covid control room, Imphal West recorded 8 deaths while Imphal East recorded 4 cases.

Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal districts recorded one death each.

The 8 victims (excluding the minor girl) from Imphal West district were two women aged 53 and 86 and six men aged 40, 48, 61, 64, 69 and 73 years.

The victims from Imphal East include a 55-year-old man and three women aged 51, 64 and 65 years.

The victims from Bishnupur and Kakching were men aged 80 and 52 years while the victim from Thoubal was a 55-year-old woman.

On the other hand, the 824 fresh Covid infections were detected while testing a total of 3,788 samples between 2 pm of May 24 and 2 pm of May 25, as per a Covid status report, which the Government issues daily.

Notably, the fresh infections of 824 do not include Covid test results of RIMS as it reported none, as per the status report.

While other private and Government hospitals and testing centres reported the number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the Covid status report shows zero (0) against RIMS.
