Imphal, September 18 2013:
Construction of NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road), which is currently handled by Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is likely to be handed over to another agency after March next year.
Talking to The Sangai Express, a reliable source said that the BRO has informed high ranking State officials that they be relieved of the duty of maintaining and looking after NH-37 by March 31 next year.
People of Manipur as well as the State Government have been expressing dissatisfaction against BRO over the slow progress of work on NH-37 which is a major lifeline of the State after NH-2 .
Informing that BRO is currently undertaking road construction works along Imphal-Jiribam, Mahadev-Tolloi, Tamenglong- Khongshang, Maram-Peren, parts of NH-150 and some other roads at the border areas which are of strategic importance, the source said that all these works may also be handed over to another agency like NH-37 .

The source further said that shifting the BRO and handing over the task to another agency however needs clearance from Union Defence Ministry, Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
As the issue of maintaining NH-37 is getting aggravated and drawing a lot of flaks from different quarters, the Centre is closely monitoring the work progress of the highway, the source added.
The source said that it is however not known which agency would handle the construction of NH-37 if the BRO is relieved of this responsibility.
Other States have separate Chief Engineers for National Highways in their respective PWDs, the source said and added that the same practice might be adopted in Manipur as well.
The State Public Works Department may be entrusted with responsibility of looking after NH-37 after March 31 next year, it added.
The new development comes close on the heels of an earlier report which The Sangai Express had carried.
In the earlier report, it was said that the BRO may be shifted out from Manipur and relocated at Jammu and Kashmir.
