Crackdown launched on driving by minors, traffic rules violators

Imphal, September 12 2019: Traffic police have started collecting undertakings from parents declaring that they would serve prison term of three years in case their underaged children are found driving vehicles.

Talking to The Sangai Express, Traffic police SP Khoisnam Sarma Devi said that many underaged children were found driving vehicles without necessary documents during the ongoing drive against violation of traffic rules.

Many two-wheeler riders were also found not wearing helmets.

Parents of underaged drivers pulled up during the ongoing drive were called and asked to sign an undertaking which declare that they would serve prison term of three years in case their underaged children are found driving vehicles ever again, said the SP.

She claimed that many parents expressed satisfaction at the initiative aimed at reducing road accidents.

As of now, no case has been registered against the underaged drivers but if they violate laws, necessary action would be taken up, she said.

Saying that 4466 cases have been registered till yesterday during the ongoing drive which was launched on August 21, the SP informed that Rs 5,15,900 has been collected as fines from defaulting drivers.

Out of the total number of cases registered so far for violation of traffic rules, 2912 pertain to two-wheelers, 945 to three-wheelers and 609 to four-wheelers, Sarma added.
