Heikru Hidongba celebrated

Heikru Hidongba, the 233rd edition of the annual traditional boat race festival of the Manipuris, was held at the moat of Sagolband Bijoy Govinda today with thousands witnessing the spectacle.
The event was organised by Bijoy Govinda Sevayet Committee.
Keeping with tradition, rituals were performed to please Lord Vishnu, the presiding deity of the festival before commencement of the boat race.
This year's boat race was performed between two groups, the one representing southern side was led by Chanam Dilip s/o Ch Pheiton of Naoremthong as Tengmai Leppa with the other representing northern side by his brother Chanam Ramesh as Tengmai Leppa.
The boat race, that began with the blowing of conch was won by the Chanam Dilip group.

In connection with the festival, secretary in-charge of customs of Govinda Sevayet Committee RK Purnachandra explained that although the boat race festival dates back to the reign of King Irengba in 984 AD, the Committee has been organising the annual boat race of Heikru Hidongba festival at the moat of Bijoy Govinda since 1779 to evoke the blessing of God and bring about prosperity to the community.
