Jiribam sub-division in Imphal East district has emerged as the hotspot for illegal migrants from Bangladesh, with an official from the Union Home Ministry claiming that some of them have been able to lay hands on the Electoral Identity Card issued by the Election Commission of India.
Talking to The Sangai Express, the official, on condition of anonymity said that some of the illegal migrants, who have settled down in Jiribam, have managed to procure the electoral identity cards issued by the Election Commission of India.
It may not be altogether be wise to solely rely on the documents produced by the suspected illegal migrants, he opined.
The official further said that the Union Home Ministry has already intimated to the State Government on the presence of illegal migrants from Bangladesh at Jiribam, which lies on the Assam-Manipur border.
Even today the influx of illegal continues, added the official.

The Home Ministry will take up necessary steps to deport the foreigners to their respective countries after they have served their penalty for illegally entering the country, said the official.
In line with the crackdown launched against illegal migrants in the last few days, police have pushed back more than 200 non-local people at Jiribam sub-division for not possessing valid documents.
Over 40 people from Myanmar and Bangladesh, who entered Manipur covertly, have been rounded up in the recent drive launched by the police.
Continuing with the verification drive to detect illegal migrants, 322 non-local people were rounded up at Ukhrul district headquarters today for verification.
No one however has been detained in the verification drive.
