Strong protests raised against Govt decision to abolish Bengali Schools

Imphal, July 02 2015 : Students of Bengali Primary School and Bengali High School have protested the Government's order to abolish the two schools in the middle of the ongoing academic session.

According to the Headmaster of Bengali High School, H Premkumar, half yearly examination of Class VI to X had commenced yesterday and it would conclude on July 10 .

Premkumar further said that he along with the Headmasters of Bengali Primary School, Moirangkhom Junior High School and Shyamasakhi High School were called up by Education (S) Director for a meeting in his office chamber yesterday at around 2.30 pm.

The Director informed them that Bengali Primary School and Bengali High School have been abolished to facilitate setting up of Ramkrishna Mission Centre, Imphal.

The Director further told the Headmasters that the Joint Secretary (Education-S) had already issued an order to this effect on June 29 .

As such, students of Bengali Primary School would be shifted to Moirangkhom Junior High School and that of Bengali High School to Shyamasakhi High School while the teaching and non-teaching staff must report to the Director of Education (S) for new postings.

Two officials of the Department handed over the order copy to him at the school today, he said and added that as such the school authority could not continue the half yearly examination.

After sudden holding back of the examination, students of these two schools staged demonstration against the Government move at the school campus today.

During their protest, they shouted slogans to save their academic year.

A student leader said that the two schools have 103 students and 14 teachers and it would not be convenient for them to shift to other schools in the middle of the academic session.

He also urged the Government to make an arrangement to run Ramkrishna Mission Centre and two schools at the same campus.

Saying that Bengali schools are more than 100 years old, the student said that it would better if the Government could upgrade the school instead of abolishing it.

Headmaster H Premkumar said that Government's order could have been issued after the completion of half yearly examination as this sudden move has disturbed students' mind.

He said that the Department had informed them that officials concerned of Ramkrishna Mission Centre would visit the school campus to commence their works on July 6 .
