Ominous start to 2014: Bomb blasts rock Imphal, man stabs aunt to death

Imphal, January 02 2014: The year 2014 started off on an ominous note with two bomb blasts at Singjamei and a huge uproar raised against the alleged murder of a woman at Kyamgei on New Year's night.

While a powerful IED exploded on the bed of Imphal river at Singjamei Sapam Leikai at around 5.49 am of January 1, another IED exploded on the eastern bank of Nambul river, just north of Pishumthong at around 6.02 am.

On the other hand, a man stabbed his aunt to death in the night of January 1 at Kyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, Imphal East district under Irilbung police station.

There was no report of any casualty in the two IED blasts.

Till date, no group has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

On the other hand, one hand grenade was found at the residential gate of Pradhan Huidrom Chandrakala (47) at Uyal Laikon, Thoubal district at around 6.30 am today.

Police have picked up the grenade.

On the other hand, in one of the most abominable and shocking acts of violence, a man stabbed his aunt to death in the night of January 1 .

According to information culled from the spot, Sangomshumbam Sahida alias Mema (55) w/o Siraj Khan of Kyamgei Muslim Awang Leikai, Imphal East district under Irilbung police station was found soaked in blood and dead inside a grocery shop opened at their residential gate at 6.30 last evening.

Deep wounds made by a sharp object were seen on her left shoulder, head and abdomen.

Moreover, gold ear ring worn by Mema, Rs 10,000 in cash and a number of mobile phone re-charge vouchers were found missing.

According to Nafisa alias Tombi (16), daughter of the deceased, her mother was stabbed while she was preparing meal in the kitchen, away from the shop.

Nafisa's elder brother, on hearing some sound, asked Nafisa to go and see what was happening.

At this, Nafisa rushed inside the shop and she found her mother lying in a pool of blood.

The mother told her that she was attacked by 'Khan' .

She alleged that her mother was murdered by one Md Noor Khan (19) s/o Md Aziz of the same locality.

Noor Khan was pulled up by police this morning in connection with the same murder case.

Shortly after, Noor Khan's house was torched by a mob.

Incidentally, Noor Khan and Sahida alias Mema were related.

Noor Khan is a son of the younger brother of Sahida's husband.

When the enraged crowd barged into the house of Noor Khan, there was no one inside the house.

Even as police tried to control the mob by firing tear gas shells and mock bombs, Noor Khan's house was attacked and vandalised.

Earlier, a JAC was constituted after holding a public meeting.

The JAC has urged the authority concerned to book the culprit(s) and file due charge-sheet without any delay.

A case has been already registered at Irilbung police station in connection with the murder case.
