Imphal, November 30 2019: Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe would visit the State in mid-December to pay homage to the Japanese soldiers killed in the State during the Second World War at the India Peace Memorial, Maibam Lotpa Ching.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra and his Japanese counterpart would hold an annual summit for two days at Guwahati in mid-December.

As a part of his trip to Guwahati, Shinzo Abe would visit the State, informed a source.

A large number of Japanese soldiers were killed in Manipur during the Second World War.

The India Peace Memorial located at Maibam Lotpa Ching was built in their memory.

The Japanese Prime Minister would pay homage to the soldiers at the India Peace Memorial apart from visiting the Imphal Peace Museum located at the same place.

Even though no definite date has been announced for Shinzo Abe's visit, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs as well as Japanese officials have visited the State twice to prepare for the high profile visit, said the source.

It is being speculated that Shinzo Abe may land at Imphal either on December 15 or 16. In connection with the proposed visit of the Japanese Prime Minister, a team of State officials led by Chief Secretary Dr J Suresh Babu today inspected both the India Peace Memorial and the Imphal Peace Museum.

The Chief Secretary was accompanied by the DGP LM Khaute Additional Chief Secretary (Works), Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries), Commissioner (Tourism/Art & Culture), Bishnupur DC, Bishnupur SP, PWD Chief Engineer and Tourism Director.

The team made an assessment of the security situation as well as necessary beautification works, conveyed the source.
