Kangdroom - Monkey truth

Manipuri Rock is finally coming of age. There are various Meiteilon language (and other indegenious language) rockers from Manipur. The first one on our YellOut list is the "Eastern Dark".

The band comprises of erstwhile rockers from the Rock-Boom period of the 1980s. This bunch of talented musicians has all sailed through the tide and is now much matured in their approach to music and in the sounds they want to create. This maturity can be experienced in their album "Kangdroom - The Monkey truth". This is probably the only album where a western classic singer Daniel Boone (Sunday Morning with Ngamu Leite) and the classic Manipuri singer Prof Ekendra (20th Century gee Romeo with 21st Century's Romeo) are covered. The main gear is western but the language is Manipuri and sometimes the singing is folkish even.

The music is mainstream rock/hard rock but three kinds of vocal styles can be heard in this album. First would be the English type of singing with the Meiteilon words mouthed like the English syllables. Second is the standard Meiteilon delivery - with meiteilon words mouthed as it is, as we know it. The third is the most interesting type where one can hear distinct influences of Manipur folk type vocal rendition - the one that is typically of the Moirang Praba or Khongjom Praba genre. Musically, Eastern Dark's music falls under various genres - reggae, slow rock and hard rock. It just goes to show their wide range of abilities. The lyrics are strong and each carrying a message. Some lyrics carry a brooding nature too. A few of them manage to tickle the funny bone with its insights of current socio-economic situation in Manipur. All put together, the editing is sleek with crisp guitar, bass, drums blending with the clear vocals. The main ensemble is backed up by violins, keyboard and backing vocals. This new sound is best experienced with the volume cranked up high.
