Equestrian Championships kick off

The 11th edition of the Director General Assam Rifles (DGAR) Cup State Equestrian Championship and the 5th IGAR (South) Junior Equestrian Championship kick-started from today along with a glittering inaugural ceremony at the Polo Ground here.
Teams comprising over 100 riders in senior, junior and young girls category from 11 different clubs are participating in the twin championship.
Major General Rajeev Chopra, IGAR (S), who graced the inaugural function as chief guest, said that it was an opportune moment to meet the riders and the sports enthusiasts from different sections of the society.

He added that the championship is aimed at encouraging the game of Polo and Equestrian to discover hidden talents in a sport which has originated from the state of Manipur.
Dr S Joy kumar, President of Manipur Equestrian Association; Brigadier MK Das, Commander of 9 Sector AR and Ksh Chourajit Singh, President Manipur Pony Society also attended the inaugural function as presidium members.
The function showcased the rich and varied cultural heritage of the state with traditional reception.
The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by a March Past of the participating teams led by pipe band of Assam Rifles.
The equestrian events are scheduled in a span of 4 days and include events like Tent Pegging (Team), Tent Pegging (individual) in senior and junior categories with individual show jumping in all the three categories of Girls, Seniors and Juniors.
Meanwhile, according to a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S), the DGAR along with IGAR (South) is ensuring the revival of this legendary sport which has seen a gradual decline over the years.
The tournament has grown from strength to strength with the participants increasing every year and the championship has emerged as an annual mega event contested by Equestrian enthusiasts from length and breadth of Manipur.
.LOlendro Singh of Kangleipak PSC won the 1st position in the senior tent pegging lance (individual) event for securing 33.0 points in the 11th Director General Assam Rifles Cup and 4th Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) Junior State Equestrian Championship 2013 today.
.NRanjan Singh of IRC, H.Jibon Singh of Chingkheihunba PC-C and L.Atangba Singh of CHPT were respectively placed in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th position for securing 32.5 30.5.30.0 points.
