Thangboi crowned Moreh badminton champion

Thangboi Gangte wrested the men's singles crown of the 1st District Level Independence Cup Badminton championship that concluded on august 20 at IMBBA Hall, Moreh.
Thangboi defeated Koson Saka 21-16, 9-21, 21-10 in the final of the championship organised by IndoMyanmar Border Badminton Association, Moreh under the sponsorship of 31 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector.
Koson Saka, however, ended on the winning side as he along with Roco anal clinched the men's doubles title with a 21-16, 14-21, 21-17 victory over M Mubi and Ch Sarat.
The losing finalists, nevertheless laid their hands on the men's 45-plus doubles crown as defeating I Inaocha and O doren.
The closing function of the championship was held with Deputy Chairman of Manipur State Planning Board Bijoy Koijam and DIG 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brig Upendra Dwivedi as the chief guest and president respectively while DIG Range-II Manipur Kh chandramani Singh, Badminton Association of India's Joint Secretary Hodam Gyaneshor Singh and Khurai AC MLA Dr Ng Bijoy Singh graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
Exhibition matches between the pair of Bijoy Koijam and Romesh Luwang against M Mubi and Ravi Singh, and Brig Upendra and Commanding Officer of 31 Assam rifles Col Ravroop against L Inaocha and O Doren were also played as a part of the closing programme.
In his address as the chief guest, Bijoy Koijam applauding endeavour of the IMBBA in organising the championship and contribution of the sponsors expressed confidence that such an event would boost morale of upcoming players in the border town.
Noting that badminton being a domain of the Mongoloid people, players from the border region could aspire to compete in international level competition provided there is proper infrastructure and training, the MLA also assured all possible contribution to in setting up a sports hall in Moreh town.
In his brief address, Col Ravroop affirmed that the Assam Rifles will extend all possible assistance to ensure that championship is held every year.
Apart from cash prizes, sports materials, mementoes and certificates were also handed over to the winners and runners-up by the closing ceremony dignitaries.
