Inter community indigenous games kicks off

Under the theme 'Unity & Love' inter community indigenous games of wrestling (mukna) and tug of war (thouri chingbi), organised by Purum Area Youth Development Organisation (PAYDO) began today at Purum Khullen, Senapati district.
The opening ceremony was graced by All Tribal Students Union president Emboi Serto, Purum Khullen chief SK David and AMUCO vice president K Hellen as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
The two day indigenous games has been conducted for the first time to bring communal harmony within the State said AMUCO vice president K Hellen.
He added that many youngsters of the State are indulging in drugs in their idle time.
If the youth are more into sports then the future of the State will be stronger, he said and added that it is high time to highlight the evils of drugs from the grass root level.
He lauded PAYDO for organising the sports meet to develop inter-community relationship in the State.
On the side lines ATSUM finance secretary Hemang Haokip said that the indigenous games of wrestling and tug of war were played since the past many decades but unfortunately the younger generation has not given these games the importance they deserve.
He lauded the organiser for the attempt to revive the indigenous games of Manipur.
He said that Manipur has more than 30 tribes and added that there is a need to coordinate them all to promote unity.
Haokip added that it is an opportunity for different communities and tribes to communicate and exchange their sentiments through this sports platform.
He called upon all to showcase more distinctive indigenous games with full traditional dresses at the next occasion and added that it would be better to promote the sports events to a district or State level function.
