Imphal, September 22 2021:
Co-ordinating Body Khurai, a conglomerate of 42 civil society organisations of Imphal East district, submitted two separate memoranda to the chief minister for opening of a SAI sports complex/centre in Imphal East district and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu Weightlifting Academy at her native village Nongpok Kakching, also in the same district.
In the first memorandum, the Body urged the chief minister to send a recommendation to the union minister of sports for opening a SAI sports complex/centre on the ground that Imphal East is one of the underprivileged districts of Manipur but has many talented players.
Out of the total numbers of Olympians the state has produced so far, half of them hail from the district.
First Olympians of the state namely P Nilakomol followed by Kshetrimayum Thoiba, Kadangbam Kothajit, late Ngangom Dingku Singh, Nameirakpam Kunjarani, Laishram Bombayla Devi, Likmabam Sushila, Shanglakpam Nilakanta (bronze medallist in Tokyo Olympic-2020) and Mirabai Chanu (silver medallist in Tokyo Olympic-2020) all hail from the district.
Taking into account of these talented sports persons from the district, the Coordinating Body Khurai urged the chief minister to propose to the sports ministry for opening SAI sports centre in Imphal East district preferably at Gwaltabi-Yaingangpokpi area at the earliest.
In another memorandum, it appealed to the chief minister to set up a world class weightlifting academy at Nongpok Kakching, since it is also the desire of Mirabai Chanu to establish an academy and groom the talented sportspersons.
