AR conducts boxing trial tournament for young girls

Mantripukhri Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) conducted Boxing Trial Tournament for young girls of Manipur at Mary Kom Boxing Academy on 25 January under the 'Khelo India Initiative'.
The trial was undertaken under the 'Operation Sadbhavna' initiative of the Assam Rifles aimed at developing close bond of faith and mutual trust with local population.
Khelo India programme has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.
Assam Rifles has also taken a lead by organizing such events in various parts of North East with an aim to identify and nurture young talents.
Mantripukhri Battalion along with Mary Kom Boxing Academy, Imphal conducted open trials for selection of young girls from Manipur for further training at Mary Kom Boxing Academy, said a press release of IGAR (S).
The trials were conducted over a period of two day from 24 to 25 Jan 2020 .
A total of 103 young girls from Manipur participated in the trials.
Mantripukhri Battalion also distributed training and boxing equipment amounting to approximately Rs 2 Lakh which included professional category boxing gloves, boxing head gear, boxing shoes, focus pads and boxing shorts and T-shirts.
The association of Assam Rifles with Mary Kom Boxing Academy is aimed to identify and promote local players of Manipur and to assist them in all possible ways to ensure the local talent is given adequate impetus and opportunity which enables them to play at State and National levels, the release added.
Earlier the Mantripukhri Battalion took 20 boxers on an informative trip to Sonipat, Hissar, Bhiwani, New Delhi and Agra.
There, the aspiring young boxers visited and experienced the State of the Art facilities in Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai and Sport Authority of India, Sonipat, the release said.
Mary Kom Boxing Academy, Imphal representatives and other dignitaries speaking on the occasion praised the thoughtful initiative of the Assam Rifles and told that this gesture will pave way for upliftment and overall development of the boxers.
Assam Rifles is committed to promote and support the 'Khelo India Initiative' to transform India into a global sporting powerhouse in the upcoming years.
