Host Manipur finished second behind Kerala on the opening day of the 5-day National Track Cycling Championship for 66th Senior, 43rd junior and 29th Sub Junior competitions at Khuman Lampak Velodrome today.
Of the six medals won by the host riders, T hemanta (39.211 secs) and T Manorama Devi (11:50.691 secs) raced to glory in youth boys 500 mtr individual time trial and junior women's 6 kms scratch race respectively.
While H Bedana Devi finished behind Manorama to secure the lone silver medal, the bronze medals were provided by Y Surjit Meitei (boys U-16 5 km scratch), Th Bishworjit (youth boys 500 mtr Indv time trial) and T Soniya Devi (women's elite 10 km scratch) .
In Kerala's opening day haul of seven medals including five of the yellow metal, Mahitha Mohan, Aleena Reji, Basappa MT, Sanuraj P and Nayana Rajesh P outpaced their respective opponents.
With one gold, four silver and a bronze medal, Punjab is at third place followed by Maharashtra (2S, 2B) in fourth as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka ended the day on one bronze each.
Earlier the championship inauguration programme was held with Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar Singh and Parliamentary Secretary (YAS) M Prithviraj Singh as the chief guest and president respectively while Cycling Federation of India secretary general Omkar Singh, Commissioner (YAS) Dr RK Nimai Singh and SAI NERC Imphal Director Dr Subhash Basumatary were the guests of honour.
