Imphal, October 19 2016:
The All Manipur Polo Association has hailed the approval of the Manipur Pony Conservation and Development Policy by the State Cabinet.
In a statement, the association said that it has been the long-felt desire of the Association in particular, and people of Manipur in general, to have such a policy.
It is understood that the Manipuri Pony is the sacred animal of Manipur that has lent its unique character of strength, agility and tenacity to the game of polo.
Moreover, despite its unique adaptation to the ecology of this region, the original polo pony of the world, declared an Endangered Breed by the State in 2013, has seen its population drop perilously to approximately 500 .
It is believed that this new Manipur Pony Conservation and Development Policy shall be extremely important in the role of protection and welfare of the Manipuri Pony, an animal of deep historical and cultural significance.
Further, the Association understands that the preservation of the Manipuri Pony means the preservation of Sagol Kangjei, the State Game of Manipur.
The Association expresses its thankfulness to the Government of Manipur on behalf of the polo community of Manipur, as well as international polo associations around the world such as the United States Polo Association that have expressed concern over and extended support.
"We commend the Government of Manipur for taking this historic step for the conservation, protection and development of Manipuri Pony, a heritage animal, not just for Manipur, but for the nation as a whole and the world over," it said.
The Association looks forward to the public notification of the Manipur Pony Conservation and Development Policy at the earliest so that, not only the polo community, but all lovers and admirers of the Manipuri Pony everywhere can contribute ideas and extend support to ensure its survival and development, it added.
