9 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) has been the key driver of friendly Indo Myanmar relations.
Continuing with the spirit of camaradrie and friendship between India and Myanmar, the Assam Rifles alongwith Moreh Badminton Association organized a Friendly Indo-Myanmar 'Badminton Tournament' on 19th July 2014, PRO IGAR (S) said in a statement.
The event was presided over by Brig Rajiv Chhibber, Commander, 26 Sector Assam Rifles.
The tournament was inaugurated by Bijoy Koijam, Vice-President of the Indian Olympic Association, an avid sports lover himself amidst great fanfare and ceremony.
The venture has been undertaken with a vision to broaden the overall prospective between the two nations through the medium of sports, acknowledged world over as the greatest unifying factor.
The Assam Rifles mooted this initiative and the idea received tremendous support from Manipur Badminton Association.
The positive reciprocation was evident by Myanmar as the event was attended by U Zaw Zaw, DC, Tamu; U Aung Myint Naung, Deputy Director, Narcotics Department; U Yan Naing Tun, Staff Officer, Administrative Department; U Man Mga, Border Trade Department and Lieutenant Colonel Than Tu Oo, CO, 347 LIR.
The tournament has provided an informal platform for much needed interaction between the officials of both nations.
Such informal interactions are invaluable towards building of mutual trust and friendship.
The tournament also provided opportunity to the Community Leaders of Moreh to interact with their counterparts from across the Border.
The tournament was contested with great enthusiasm and fervor, with the spirit of Friendship and Cooperation finally emerging as the undisputed winner.
It is hoped that this initiative will go a long way in cementing the edifice of mutual trust and friendship between India and Myanmar, the PRO added.
