Imphal, August 18 2017:
With Lakshya Sen winning the men's singles title at the 2017 Eurasia Bulgarian Open Badminton Championships recently, the spotlight is now on the emerging shuttlers in the country identified as outstanding prospects for the future.
Vimal Kumar, the coach at the Bangalore-based Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) revealed that there are four such players who are in the growing stage and have the 'outstanding' prospects.
One among them is Maisnam Meiraba Luwang, the young lad from Manipur with quicksilver reflexes.
The other three are the Bulgaria Open champion Lakshya; Kiran George, who is the current under-17 national champion and Rahul Bharadwaj.
Bom on 12 December 2002, Meiraba has come a long way at such a tender age.
From getting selection for the Olympic Gold Quest Scholarship Program to winning an U15 title in Thailand, he has achieved feats that are truly the mark of a future star.
His latest exploit was winning the Under-17 singles' title at the 16th Union Bank All India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament that was held in Bangalore last June.
On the other hand, Lakshya has been competing against players much older than him in the junior ranks.
Though eligible to play at the under-17 level, he willingly eschewed that right, and played only in the under-19s, to be ranked number one in the world among the players at that level.
