Manipur emerge overall champions in 64th National School Games Fencing

Imphal, November 17 2018:
Manipur claimed a total of 10 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals to emerge overall champions of the 64th National School Games in Fencing for U-14 (Boys and Girls) and U-17 (Boys and Girls) which culminated today at Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak, Imphal.
The event organised by Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur under the aegis of School Games Federation of India since November 13 saw a healthy participation of 730 athletes from 19 State units across India.
Manipur emerge overall champions in both U-14 boys and girls and U-17 boys and girls categories with 55 points and 42 points respectively.
Gujarat with a total of 21 points emerged overall runners up in U-14 boys and girls while Punjab secured 31 points to claim the overall runners up title of U-17 boys and girls.
The final day of the competition saw Manipur had another gold medal through W Sonia who overcame Valentina Th by 15-6 points in an all- Manipuri U-14 girls foil individual final match.
The bronze medals of this event went to semifinalists Namrata from Gujarat and M Preety of Tamil Nadu.
In the U-14 boys sabre individual final, Dharamraj of Gujarat defeated Aman Tomar of Delhi by 15-12 points to claim the gold medal while Harshid of Jammu and Kashmir and Guramanjot from Punjab claimed the bronze medals.
In the U-17 boys epee individual final, Ankit Sharma of Madhya Pradesh outwitted Ajay of Punjab by 15-6 points to fetch the gold medal in style.
Manipur's O Poireihanba and Velian from Tamil Nadu who made themselves upto semifinals got the bronze medals in this event.
The winners and runners up units were feted today during the valedictory ceremony graced by Armstrong Pame, Director Youth Affairs and Sports; Kh Pramoda Devi, Joint Director Youth Affairs and Sports; L Jayentakumar, Joint Director Youth Affairs and Sports and Sanjay Gautam, Observer School Games Federation of India as dignitaries.
