Pudunamei village celebrates 'Saleni', Mao indigenous war game

Senapati, July 31 2022:
Pudunamei village in Senapati district celebrated Saleni, a post transplantation festival, with Mao traditional indigenous war game.
The occasion was graced by Mao MLA Losii Dikho, and Karong MLA J Kumo Sha.
In his speech, Thisho Kriina, ex-ADC member, stat ed that Pudunamei village is 109 km away from the state capital and 3 & half km from NH, Mao Gate.
"Lerii Kaphi" known for local indigenous war game was played during the Saleni festival normally in the month of July.
It is a well known game played by one of the renowned Mao Naga village at Pudunamei village in Senapati district.

In remembrance of the valour and courage of the great forefathers using spears and swords in the olden head-hunting days and also to inculcate the tradition to the future generations, the village practices Lerii Kaphi every year with zeal and enthusiasm, he said.
Thisho Kriina further explained that the war game is played on the second day of Saleni festival by dividing team into 2 groups as the upper village society and southern progressive society depicting the warring villages of the past.
The distance between the 2 places is about 560 feet approximately and all the sides are fully adorned by the anxious spectators.
The game lasts for 4 days and is played age-wise in descending order.
Addressing the gathering, MLA J Kumo Sha while expressing his happiness to be part of the festival said that Saleni is still considered the most important festival for Mao and Poumai communities.
The MLA then urged all to forget and forgive about the hurt feelings caused due to the election, adding that election should not break the relationship between the Mao and Poumai communities.
He also asked for advice to fulfil the wish of the people as an elected representative.
48-Mao AC MLA, Losii Dikho conveyed that the chief minister was unable to attend the festival due to weather condition but the MLA lauded the CM for his concern for the hill districts by visiting every nook and corner of the state.
Different district CSOs, village chiefs, village authority members, student bodies, District Olympic Association, District Red Cross and others attended the event.
