2nd Lt Col Robert TA Memorial Football Tournament begins

The 2nd edition of Lt Col Robert TA Memorial Open Football Tournament commenced at Sanyi Dahrii Sports Complex, Khabung Karong, Senapati on Friday.
16 teams across the state are competing in the tournament organised by Maram Battalion under the aegis of Jwalamukhi Sector Assam Rifles of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) under Assam Rifles Civic Action Program Project.
P Chingpai, w/o (L) Lt Col Robert TA, during her speech conveyed her mother-in-law's message thanking the Indian army for everything they have done in memory of her late son, who had served in the Indian army.
Briefing media persons, Major Abhay Jeet of the 33 Assam Rifles, stated that late Lt Col Robert TA was an officer of Indian army who laid down his life for the nation on Mayl4, 2020 in an avalanche in north Sikkim.
The late officer had led his patrol party with great skills and unflinching behaviour and laid down his life.
The previous edition was held in February, 2021 at Maram with 16 different teams participating in the tournament.
The main reason of organising the 2nd edition of Lt Col Robert TA Memorial Football Tournament is to guide and inspire the youth, following the footsteps and to become a great officer for the country, he continued.
The army major also informed that 16 teams are taking part in the tournament which will continue till March 11, adding that chief minister N Biren Singh is expected to attend the final day of the tournament on March 11 .
A one-minute silence was observed in honour of the late army officer before the start of the matches.
The tournament was declared open by Brigadier Bikram Saini, DIG Jwalamukhi Sector Assam Rifles, in the presence of Col Arnab Mitra, commandant 33 AR, officers from 22 Sector AR & 33 AR and District Sports Association, Senapati.
The tournament carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh for the winning team and Rs 1 lakh for runners-up team.
The tournament is being organised by 33 Assam Rifles in association with the District Sports Association (DSA), Senapati.
All India Football Federation Certified referees from the district are looking after the matches which are held on knockout basis.
The first match was played between Zeme Youth & Students Organization and Liangmai BFC and the second match between FC Raengdai and Khongdei Circle FC .
