State level Boxing championship begins

Even though Manipur has produced some finest boxers of the country in the past years, the State seemingly fails to live upto its billing as the country's sports powerhouse since the number of boxers of repute from the State has declined during the last few years.
As such, there is the urgency for a serious soul-searching whether there is any lapse on the part of the authority.
This was stated by Dy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar while speaking today as the chief guest of the inaugural session of the State level boxing championship organised by Manipur Amateur Boxing Association at Khuman Lampak Boxing Arena.
Expressing serious concern over the 'decline' in boxers of national and international reputes from the State, the Dy CM said the authority concerned should ponder if there is any lapse and rectify any mistake so that boxing talents of the State are duly recognised and nurtured.
A total of 256 boxers including 93 women boxers from 11 affiliated units will compete for the top honours.
The opening ceremony was amongst others attended by P Doungel, ADGP; Dr Y Yaima Singh, MD, Horizon Hospital and Research Institute and Col Sanjay Mothey, CO, 169 Infantry Bn, Assam as the dignitaries.
The opening day saw S Rahul of Bishnupur beating R Bisho Koireng of Ukhrul in the sub-junior men's C-8 category.
In the C-9, Kakching's Thoithoiba Longjam defeated L Samson Meitei of Churachandpur while L Rojit of Imphal West outpunched Majangpu Kamei of Tengnoupal.
In the sub-jun-ior men's C-10, Raspriya Meitei of Thoubal outpunched A Deepak Sharma of Kakching while T Lamyanba Meitei of Ukhrul defeated M Imran Alam of Kangpokpi.
M Chungreireng Kom also punched his way to the second round after defeating Th Vickyraj Singh of Tengnoupal.
In the sub-junior boys B-10, N Thoithoiba of Kakching and T Somoijit of Thoubal boxed their way to the second round after defeating their respective opponents.
In the sub-junior women's A-10, Th Elija of Imphal West outpunched Lalrinchuani Pautu of Imphal East.
In the sub-junior women's A-l 1, Boichong Hangshing of Imphal West defeated TS Elizabeth Chiru of Ukhrul.
N Kalpana of Thoubal and Timreichon of Ukhrul beat their respective opponents in the sub-junior women's B-8.In the sub-junior women's C-8, Lily Kamei of Imphal East and S Surmala of Bishnupur boxed their way to the second round.
