Assam Regimental Centre (ARC), Shillong rallied from a goal down to outlast Manipur Police sports Club (MPSC) 5-2 in the final match of
the 10th Dr Kanti Mukherjee Memorial Invitation Hockey Tournament at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium today.
After conceding a goal only six minutes into the game when MPSC's N Gunamani converted a penalty corner, ARC came back strongly with four goals before the local side pulled back one on Gunamani's second in the 51st minute.
However, the commanding lead was restored when Thanga struck his second of the match in the 64th minute, his first coming in the 21st.The other ARc scorers are Y Holendro (12th) and M Arunkumar (19th, 49th).The champions walked away with the top booty of Rs 30,000 and the running trophy handed over by Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh, who graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest.
While the runners-up prize was worth Rs 10,000, scorer of the match winner
Thanga was adjudged the best player of the tournament carrying Rs 5000 as P Adeva of MPSC and Arif Ansari of the SSB jointly bagged the top scorer award on 11 goals and Rs 1000 each.
Cosmo, Wangkhei finished third to claim the Rs 5000 award for their effort, while Ph Rohen of ARC won the best goal-keeper honour with Hockey Union, Lairikyengbam Leikai declared the best discipline team of the tournament organised by Manipur Hockey association since Dec 30, 2007 .
