Bodies hail Manipuri women sportspersons

While congratulating Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Poirei Leirmarol Meira Paibee Apunba, Manipur and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) said that Manipuri sportswomen have been playing vital roles in enhancing Manipur's profile before the world and upholding its reputation as a powerhouse of sports in India.
In a joint release, the women's organisations prayed for Mirabai to achieve more success in her future sporting venture and iterated that the world has recognised Manipur due to the unique skills and grit of Manipuri sportswomen in international sporting events.
After Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics in weight lifting, people from other states of the country and the world are trying to know her more thoroughly.
As such, Manipur which is a small state in the northeast has risen above the rest, they continued.
While reminding all concerned that pugilist MC Mary Kom won many medals and brought laurels for Manipur, the release said that Mirabai winning the Olympic silver medal has exalted Manipur even more.
Manipur government and its people have paid respect to the Olympic silver medalist Mirabai.
However, in order to pay the highest respect for all time, the government should include Mirabai's life-journey in High School syllabus, the release stressed, while adding that inclusion of Mirabai's tales in school syllabus will help in producing more Manipuri sportspersons who would win medals in international events.
In another release, Manipuri Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima) lauded Mirabai for winning the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and highlighted that the strength and potential of Manipuri women has been known through ages, from Linthoingambi to the roles of women in the Seven Years devastation as well as in second Nupi Lan.
In today's generation, the potential of Manipuri women is shown to the world by Mirabai.
Manipuri women and the story of Mirabai will remain eternally etched in the history of women of the world, it added.
Macha Leima further applauded Manipuris participating at the Tokyo Olympics including MC Mary Kom (Boxing); Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam (Hockey); Shanglakpam Nilakanta (Hockey) and Likmabam Sushila Devi (Judo) .
