Imphal, February 16 2015:
A five-day training programme on fish farming began today under the aegis of District Fishery Office, Imphal East at Porompat Panchayat, DC campus.
Chief guest of the event K Saratkumar, Director, Fishery said the training programme is being imparted to 91 persons out of a total 100 who applied for the programme.
Similar training programme would soon be organised for the left out candidates, he assured.
Fish farming could not flourish in Imphal East district due to the lack of ponds and rivers in the area.
However, recently, fish farmers have started fish farming in the available lakes and ponds of the area.
There are at present two fish farms in the entire Imphal East district and more importantly a training place for fish farmers at Khundrakpam, which according to the Director is a big improvement in itself.
Fish farming is a profitable trade.
However, the trade needs proper training as it could also incur heavy losses if handled immaturely.
Additional Director of Fishery, Kh Memcha Devi and District Fishery Officer, Imphal East Y Ibobi Singh were also present at the opening day of the training programme held today.
