Imphal, January 19, 2012:
Sustainable Development Centre (SDC), Thamnapokpi has pressed the government for ensuring 25 percent seat reservations and free education to students belonging to weaker sections of the society in private schools in class I and II under the Rights to Education Act, 2009. In a statement, Secretary of SDC Kh Inaobi Meetei pointed out that students of class I to VIII who are between the age group of 6 to 14 are entitled to get free and compulsory education under Right to Education and there should be reservation of 25 percent seats for students belonging to weaker sections in the Aided, Private and Special Category schools.
The government has already taken up steps to ensure reservation of seats for students in class I in Aided and Private Schools since the last academic session and the seat reservation is to be upgraded every year.
The government should ensure that the process is continued in the upcoming academic session as well so as to ensure free education.
This would be beneficial to the students, the statement observed, while drawing the attention of the government for doing the needful in this regard.
