Imphal, March 04 2015:
JD-U State unit has lambasted summary rejection of the recommendations of Justice (Retd) Jeevan Reddy Committee to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 by the BJP-led NDA Government.
Talking to some media persons today, JD-U general secretary Lien Gangte said that his party strongly condemns rejection of the committee's recommendation by the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Noting that several civil society organisations, human rights defenders and the general public have been demanding abolition of AFSPA for the past many years, Lien Gangte said that JD-U submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh when he visited the State sometime back to repeal AFSPA from Manipur.
The decision of the NDA Government has belied all the hopes of the people of Manipur.
The recommendation of Justice (Retd) Jeevan Reddy Committee merits serious consideration, he added.
