Rs 1.21 lakh collected from SOP violators

The Police Department collected a sum of Rs 1,21,800/- (one lakh, twenty one thousand and eight hundred only) as fines from SOP violators today.
The Police Department continued the crack down on violators of guidelines and restrictions issued by the State Government and the State Disaster Management Authority in connection with COVID-19 pandemic, including failure to wear mask in public places, failure to maintain social distancing in public places, spitting in public places, etc.
to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the State.
During today's drive, 371 persons were detained and released later after warning and a sum of Rs 1,21,800/- was collected as fine from SOPs violators, said a statement by the Police.
The Police Department warned that those who violate the SOP shall be dealt with strong legal action under National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other appropriate laws.
In total, the Police Department has collected a sum of Rs 1,86,04,110/- (One crore, eighty six lakh, four thousand and eight hundred only) as of today.
Despite the increase in penalty for SOP violators, the public continues to break the guidelines.
On the other hand the OC of Imphal police station today produced 26 persons, who violated the guidelines and restrictions issued by the Manipur State Disaster Management Authority and the State Government before the District Magistrate, Imphal West district this morning at 9.45 .
The persons were detained for not wearing face mask and not maintaining social distancing in public places, reported the OC of Imphal PS.
The persons also confessed to the charges levelled against them and the District Magistrate ordered that fine amounting to Rs 26,000 be imposed on them as a penalty for their failure to wear mask in public places.
The police managed to collect a total of Rs 20,000 as 6 out of the 26 persons were unable to pay the fine.
While ordering to immediately release those who could furnish the penalty, the District Magistrate ordered to detain the remaining 6 persons till 9.30 pm.
In another similar case of violating the guidelines, 15 persons were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West after a non-FIR case was registered against them at the City police station under section 32 of Police Act 1861 .
After perusing the case record, the Court explained the particulars of offence to accused persons and asked whether they plead guilty or not.
And as the persons accepted the charges levelled against them for not wearing mask in public places, the Court convicted them to either pay a fine of Rs 1000 each or undergo simple imprisonment for 3 days.
All the convicts were eventually released on furnishing the fine and the same has been deposited to the State's account.
