IMC collects Rs 2.7 lakh during Nambul river cleanliness drive

After having completed the cleanliness drive of Nambul River from Thongnambolbi to Keishampat junction on July 12, the same cleanliness has been continuing on Sunday from Keishampat junction to Keishamthong.
And during the drive, a sum of Rs 2.7 lakhs has been collected as fines from 135 individuals for throwing solid waste materials into Nambul River.
At the spot of the drive, the Director of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD), N Gitkumar Singh averred that Nambul River cleanliness drive was launched on July 12 last in accordance with cabinet decision of keeping Imphal city and its surrounding area neat and clean.
He told that cleaning of the Nambul River from Thongnambolbi to Keishampat was completed and still progressing it from Keishampat junction to Keishamthong.
The MAHUD director continued that the department of MAHUD has set the target of cleaning Nambul River from Naoremthong to Heirangoithong.

Gitkumar further asserted that the success of the cleanliness at Paona Bazaar, Thangal Bazaar and also BT Road has motivated to launch new venture of Nambul River cleanliness drive which was started from July 12 last and will be continued on every Sunday till reaching its target.
He also expressed his concern of keeping Imphal city including Nambul River neat and clean and added that drive for house to house collection of solid waste materials will also be launched for the benefit of the road side dwellers behind Nambul River.
Moreover, the MAHUD director continued, a law has been framed to check solid waste dumping into Nambul River and 135 individuals were caught red handed while dumping solid waste into the River.
He further added that Rs 2000 has been collected as fine from each individual and a Lock-Up Cell is attached at IMC.
Asserting the future course of action, Gitkumar maintained that the cleanliness drive will be a long term plan and further informed that altogether 80 labours from the NGOs and IMC have been participating in the drive and the labours charged no money for it.
The speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Lokeshwar Singh mentioned that the drive is a good step towards betterment of the city environment and conveyed his desire of continuing it in a long lasting manner.
The speaker expressed his displeasure of throwing solid waste material in the just clean portion of River.
Expressing his opinion, the Keishamthong A/C MLA L Ibomcha Singh mentioned of organising awareness programme so as to inform the road side residence of Nambul River that throwing solid waste into the River is illegal.
He also referred of collecting fine and jail term for rule violation and provision for installing CCTV camera.
