Imphal, June 10 2020:
Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council, has once again urged the State Government to call an all political party meeting before the ongoing delimitation work based on the contentious 2001 census report draws more flak from many sections of the society and the situation get worse.
CPI has been repeatedly sending proposals to the State Government to convene an all political party meet to discuss the delimitation activities but the State Government is paying no heed on the pretext of COVID-19 issue in the State, said a statement issued by secretary of the CPI State Council, L Sotinkumar.
The Delimitation Commission of India had deferred the delimitation process in 5 States including Manipur in 2008, on security grounds and other issues prevailing in the State, the statement continued while adding that delimitation work in these States were to be halted till 2026 as per an order of the President.
Many political parties including CPI, have been denouncing the 2001 census report which showed abnormal population growth in few Assembly segments of the State, it said.
Reverification of voters at some segments was conducted under the supervision of the State Election Officer and subsequently thousands of bogus voters were removed from the electoral list, recalled CPI.
If the delimitation work based on faulty census data is not stopped, uncontrollable agitation/crisis from various sections are likely to arise in the State, CPI continued.
To avoid the likely situation, the State Government should make necessary arrangements to convene an all party meeting while there is time, suggested CPI.
It will be wise for the State Government to reach out to all stakeholders and consider their view points and come to an amicable solution, it added.
