Imphal, July 01 2017:
Registering a strong protest against the Chief Minister's statement that the State Government is considering export of local made liquor as a measure to boost economy, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) tried to storm the CM Secretariat this evening .
However, agitating members of the women's group led by its general secretary Thokchom Ramani were pacified by security personnel and made to stop at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex .
Speaking to newspersons, Ramani hailed the new coalition Government led by BJP for initiating a plethora of development programmes but the move to export local made liquor is unacceptable to them .
She said that the rate of crime against women, drug abuse and violence witnessed in the State is alarming .
She pointed out that even though Manipur was declared a Dry State, the rate of sale and consumption of alcohol is increasing thereby causing many unwanted incidents .
She also observed that if the less quantity of rice produced in the State is used in preparing alcohol to ensure its bulk export then there will be an acute scarcity of rice in the State .
Claiming that Nupi Samaj has been taking a lead role in rooting out psychotropic drugs from the State, she called upon the people to make the State free from drugs .
She cautioned that the women's group along with the public will launch an intense movement if the State Government goes ahead with its move to export local made liquor .
She added that a memorandum in this regard will be submitted to the Chief Minister.
