Imphal, February 28 2018:
Maintaining that dishonest politics does not last long, ex-Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam attacked the incumbent BJP-led Government today saying that the party (BJP) has started feeling insecure following the recent political developments regarding the issue of appointment of Parliamentary Secretaries in the State.
The ex-Deputy CM was speaking as the chief guest at the first death anniversary of former Rajya Sabha MP Haji Abdul Salam organized by Haji Abdul Salam Memorial Trust at Lamyanba Shanglen today.
Gaikhangam accused BJP-led Governments of both the State and the Centre of making a plethora of false promises and added that such trend of dishonest politics is most worrisome for the whole country.
He also indirectly refened and likened the incumbent BJP Government to a structure built entirely with sand and said that it will not last long.
Nowadays a trend of "thikaraj" has emerged in the State with money buying votes.
People no longer consider the integrity and capability of candidates, instead they ask how much money or properties the candidates have.
In this situation, there is no place/space for politicians of true principle.
However, such politics does not last long and ultimately lead to a distressful situation, he said.
Emphasizing on the life of former Rajya Sabha MP Haji Abdul Salam and his political career, Gaikhangam said that the contributions of the former MP to the society could not described in an hour or two.
He described Abdul Salam as a personality having distinctive quality who needs no introduction.
Conveying that he and the former MP were closely associated for a long time, Gaikhangam asserted that the former MP was a dedicated and honest politician as well as a social worker.
Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya lauded the roles taken by Abdul Salam during his lifetime as a politician saying the latter took immense roles in amending the reservation policy for minorities which ultimately paved way for raising the number seats reserved for minorities from 2 per cent to 4 per cent.
He went on to inform that Abdul Salam sought help from all Parliamentarians in this regard and gave strong pressure in the Parliament during his tenure to amend the reservation policy.
Waqf Board, Manipur's Chairman and Wabagai A/C MLA Fajur Rahim noted that Abdul Salam during his tenure as MLA carried out many development activities in his locality at Wabagai A/C, including blacktopping of roads.
He described the former late MP as hard working, passionate and sympathetic to people's plight.
The function was also attended by Outer Manipur Lok Sabha MP Thangso Baite and MPCC president TN Haokip as the guest of honor and president respectively.
Gifts were also presented to the individuals associated with Abdul Salam during his life time and to many orphans during the function.
