World Heart Day observed

As observed in other parts of the world, the World Heart Day was organised by Manipur Heart Care Society today at Lainingthou Khamlangba community hall, Sagolband Moirang Leirak .
Speaking at the occasion, president of Manipur Heart Care Society and first heart surgeon of Manipur Dr Ksh Kala said that 19.3 million people have been claimed annually by heart diseases.
80 percent of the victims are from developing countries.
India records the highest number of death due to heart related diseases .
Dr Kala said the number of heart diseases related death is higher than death caused by other ailments.
Cardiovascular diseases related death rate is also very high in Manipur .
Early diagnosis, timely and proper treatment of cardiovascular diseases could prevent death.
The risk of heart diseases is higher in women, he said .
10 to 15 percent of patients admitted to hospitals in Manipur are said to be patients of heart related diseases.
The prevalent rate is much higher in Delhi, Mumbai and other metropolitan cities .
In Manipur, prevailing situation in the society and family has caused an increase in the number of heart patients.
Children make insurmountable demands on their parents, he said while adding that stress is one of the major factors for prevalence of heart disease .
It was in this light that the first Heart Day in Manipur was observed in 2004 .
The World's Heart Day was first observed in 2000 .
Dr Kala said people may live longer if people take proper care of their health .
Prof Y Iboton, senior consultant, Dept of Medicine, JNIMS; Dr Lokendro Arambam, former Director of MU's Audio Visual Research Centre and Dr Arambam Athouba also spoke on the occasion.
