Seasonal rain arrives early, exceeds normal

Imphal, May 19 2022:
A part from arriving early, the seasonal rain has exceeded the normal volume of rainfall expected in the month of May by 145 mm.
According to information received from ICAR Imphal's Agrometeorology Advisory Services, normal volume of rainfall expected in the month of May is 173.6 mm.
The State has received 318 mm of rainfall during the current month till date.
As more rainfall is likely in the coming days, the rainfall rate for the month of May would be rising, said the source.
The volume of rainfall received by the State in the month of January this year was 12.8 mm higher than the expected volume of 30.4 mm.
In the month of February, the State received 47.9 mm of rainfall against the expected volume of 38.8 mm.
The corresponding figures for the month of March were 57 mm and 76 mm.
The State received 141 mm of rainfall in the month of April against the expected volume of 122.9 mm.
The State has been receiving more than the expected volumes of rainfall every month till the current month except March, said the source.
Today's rainfall rate was 18 mm.
Department of Environment and Climate Change Joint Director Dr T Brajakumar said that rainfall rate in all the Himalayan States including Manipur would rise by around 40 per cent in the next 30 years (2020-50) on account of the rising temperature across the region.
The rainfall projection is true so far and it is higher than the expected volume, he said.
Tamenglong received 100 mm of rainfall and Senapati 97 mm in a single day on May 12 and this heavy rainfall was a potential cause for flood in the State, he added.
