Imphal, November 18 2014:
Irate patient's party damaged properties at Raj Medicity after a 59-year-old man died in the private hospital today.
The deceased has been identified as Toijam Manihar of Thambalkhong Sabal Leikai.
After hearing the news of Manihar's death, around 100 people from his locality stormed the hospital and vandalised the OPD, emergency ward and managing director's room.
Apart from taking away keys of some vehicles parked outside the hospital, they also broke window glasses, computers and furniture of the hospital.
Later, the mob was controlled by a police team led by top police officers of Imphal West district.
Hospital Superintendent Dr Nabakishore said that Manihar was a patient of senior surgeon consultant of the hospital, Dr Noren.
He added that Dr Noren conducted keyhole surgery to remove Manihar's gallbladder at around 1 pm yesterday.
After the operation, he was shifted to the hospital ward, he added.
Dr Nabakishore further said that nothing abnormal or complications could be detected when he was examined by a duty doctor after Manihar complained of dizziness at around 2 am today.
However, when he was again checked at around 4 pm, it was detected that Manihar had developed urine retention, Dr Nabakishore said and added that the patient passed urine after he was administered a medicine.
As his condition deteriorated at around 6 am, Manihar was immediately shifted to the ICU, Dr Nabakishore said and added that the patient however passed away at around 8 am.
Saying that no doctor wants his patients to die, Dr Nabakishore said that however it is not possible to save the life of every person admitted to a hospital.
Maintaining that it was unfortunate to blame the doctors and the hospital for a patient's death, Dr Nabakishore said that such instances would make the doctors reluctant to treat patients.
Saying that police have taken up a case of the incident, Dr Nabakishore said 'let the doctors and hospital staff get punishment' if they are found guilty.
However, people must stop attacking hospitals in future, he added.
