Chandel, December 17 2015:
Vehicular movement along the Imphal-Moreh section of National Highway-102 was severely affected due to the bandh called by the Students' Union of Mission Blind School, Heikakpokpi demanding conversion of their school to a full-fledged Government school.
The bandh that came into effect last midnight will continue till the midnight of December 21 .
A large number of students and bandh supporters blocked the highway between Thamlapokpi and Bongjang village since early morning.
Several commercial and private vehicles coming from Imphal towards Moreh were stranded on the road while some vehicles returned towards Imphal.
However, people who needed emergency medical attention and religious activities were given free passage by the bandh supporters.
Speaking to reporters, Mission Blind School Principal Pareng Korn said that the bandh was clamped against the indifferent attitude of the State Government regarding conversion of the only private Blind School into a full-fledged Government school.
The school has been giving education to many visually challenged students of hill districts and Nagaland since its inception in 2003, he said.
However, the school authority has not received any assist- ance or financial grant from the State Government till date, he lamented.
Korn further said that the Chief Minister and Education Minister had given assurances to convert the school to a full-fledged Government school on several occasions in the past.
Kom said that the school authority and the State Government had inked an MoU to bring the matter before the State Legislative Assembly on May 4 this year.
However, the MoU is yet to be translated into action, the Principal said.
