Imphal, December 16 2013:
The Hill Areas Committee (HAC) today held a meeting and discussed a plethora of issues ranging from ambiguity on police jurisdictions, unclear district boundaries, land records etc.
The meeting held in the committee room of the New Assembly Secretariat, Chingmeirong was presided by HAC Chairman Chaltonlien Amo and it went on for
four hours.
After deliberating on reports furnished by different civil society organisations and Autonomous District Councils regarding controversies over district boundaries, land records and overlapping police jurisdictions, the meeting agreed to study these matters in another meeting after collecting detail reports from relevant authorities.
The meeting further agreed to call on the Governor in January next year after compiling a draft report in response to the Governor's query about the functions, activities and power of HAC.
Another point of agreement was collection of report from district authorities about the extent of impact wildlife sanctuaries/national parks have on the livelihood and environment of hill people.
The meeting also discussed about the complaints filed by civil organisations against BRO's working style.
It later decided to support the decision that may be adopted by the State Government with regard to BRO's working style.
It further resolved to urge the Chief Minister who is also in charge of Finance Department to hike the monthly pension of MLAs to Rs 50,000 from Rs 25,000 and also to increase the MLA Local Area Development Fund for MLAs elected from hill areas in view of the large areas covered by their Assembly segments.
