Awareness programme on VAW held

An awareness programme on violence against women was held today at Khongman Zone-I&II Community Hall.
The programme was jointly organised by All Manipur Women NGO Forum and women social workers of Khongman.
Th (O) Amirani Devi, member of Nongchup Zilla Parishad and W Joymati Devi, chief patron of AMWNF attended the programme as the chief guest and president respectively.
Pradhan of Khongman GP, Moirangthem (O) Nungsirei Devi and adviser of MSF Udoi Luwang were the guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Amirani Devi said crime against women has witnessed a steep rise in the State.
As such, it has become necessary for all including parents to deeply deliberate on measures to fight the menace.
W Joymati Devi said crime of all sorts against women is widely prevalent in the State.
There has been an instance of a 60 year old man raping just a four year old girl.
Many women have been killed and abandoned.
Hence, it is essential particularly for women to think over ways not to become victims of such offences, she said.
Moirangthem Nungsirei urged all concerned to encourage their female wards to participate in such awareness programme and infuse the traditions of the society.
Advocate Khaidem Londonbala pointed out that many cases have remained pending regarding crimes against women.
Trial could not be conducted in most cases due to lack of evidence.

Ng Liklaileima, staff reporter of The Sangai Express said that parents and members of local clubs and meira paibis have collective responsibility to prevent crime against women.
In case of any rape case reported in a nearby place, the cloth of the victim should be handed over to the police.
She also stressed the necessity to change the notion of male superiority.
Men should also respect women like women respect them.
