'3rd Nupi Lan' recalled

Several meira paibi lups including Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup (KANGLAMEI), Porei Leimarol Meira Paibi Lup, Ching-Tam United Women's Association (CHITUWA), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Nupi Samaj, All Manipur Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup , The Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak (MEPWAK), Kangleipak Women's Welfare Association (KWWA) and Women Welfare Organisation Kangleipak (WWOK), jointly observed 79th Nupi Lan Day at YWC, Palace Compound, today.
During the event, the congregation paid floral tributes to the women who took part in Nupi Lan.
Speaking at the occasion, social activist John Elangbam conveyed that in 1980 various contemporary scholars and other individuals announced the beginning of 3rd Nupi Lan against the security personnel for harassing the innocent public, which they claimed as "State Terrorism" .
Saying that many news of fake encounters, from 1980 till late 2010, erupted after the imposition of AFSPA in the State, Johnson maintained that the meira paibis of that time confronted the security personnel in the middle of the night and saved many lives, which he said is the most important movement of all.
Pointing out that one convict involved in a 2015 rape case was awarded death sentence for the very first time in the State recently, he added that the crimes against women are increasing rapidly, which has led to another battle for the women community.
He also credited the womenfolk for the positive development taken up by the Supreme Court regarding various cases of fake encounters in the State.
Convenor, Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur, N Bimol Meetei also urged all the women to recall the bravery and vigour shown by the Manipuri women in the 1st and 2nd Nupi Lan for the welfare of the State.
All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation, Aribam Sitara Begum, Kabui Mother's Association Manipur, G Atongpi, Ching Tarn United Women Association president, M Purnirnashi.
KANGLAMEI president, Y Leirik Leima, Porei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, L Memchoubi, AMKIL president Phanjoubam Sakhi Leima also spoke at the event and praised the brave mothers for their courage.
